Do you mix compliments and criticisms?

It sounds something like this, "Honey, the flower bed looks great… now you need to work on that lawn."  Or, maybe you're talking to your son or daughter, "You've really brought up your grade in science… too bad your English class is bringing down your average."  See what I mean?  A compliment needs to stand on its own to be really effective.  Use them as a way to encourage others, not to point out their flaws. The full benefit of it sinks in so much better when it's not dragged down by a criticism.  Accentuate the positive.  To make a memorable event out of every day successes, print out one of our Certificates of Achievement for your child
