Are you ready to get started recording your life story? Before you step in front of your video recorder, here are some tips to help you organize your thoughts.
Go through your old photographs and scrapbooks. Have post-it notes handy. If a memento brings back memories of a specific person or event, write it on the post-it note and stick it to back of the photo. Most importantly, try to put a date on the item. Then, you can put the items in order by date.
Write down the significant events in your life. Don't worry about going into detail at this point. Just write an outline of the big events, from your childhood to the present. You might want to keep a small notepad or voice recorder with you. As your memory gets jogged, you'll want to be able to jot down the details of memories as they come to
Once you have a complete outline, begin filling in the specifics. Be as detailed as you can. The more you remember, the more interesting and valuable your recording will be. Future generations will cherish this glimpse into your life.
Set aside a time to record. Don't wait until you're in the mood. Choose a date and stick to it. You may want to create your recording a little at a time, over a series of days, weeks, or even months. Whatever you decide, adhere to your schedule and follow through to completion.

Capture your surroundings. From time to time, turn the camera away from yourself and get some footage of other family members, your home, your pets, your car. Future generations will enjoy seeing where and how you lived.
