Pillow Journals

Printer Friendly Version

To start your own pillow journals, just follow these simple steps:

  1. Buy a blank notebook. It can be a school-type notebook or a bound journal. You can also use loose leaf notebook paper, with a ribbon or string tied through the top hole.

  2. Designate a journal for each child. (Husbands and wives can also take part in pillow journals.)

  3. Write a note in each of the journals. It can be a question, a compliment or an observation. To start her pillow journals, Mark Merrill's wife asked their oldest daughter about her first day of school. She told their younger daughter how proud she was of her good behavior. And for their son, who's learning to write, she asked a question and made answer boxes for him to check off.

  4. Lay the journal on your child's pillow, before they go to bed. Explain to them that they can write you back and put the journal on your pillow.

  5. When you get the journal back from your children, write another note and continue passing it back and forth.
