Celebrating Black History Month with your Family
Printer Friendly Version

Black History Month is an excellent opportunity to teach your children about the life and history of African Americans.  Here are some tips and ideas of what your family can do during Black History Month.

1. Attend events held in your community, schools, or at your local library etc.

Your desire to listen and learn will provide you with more knowledge of the topic.

2. Read a book or an article about the history of African-Americans in the United States.

3. Sponsor events with African-American organizations.

This is a great way to show interest in African history through action (i.e. trying to arrange an event to educate others about the topic).

4. Make a bedtime story night for your kids a story about an African or African-American.

Do you read to your kids at night before they go to bed? If so, talk to them a bit about Black History Month (if they go to public school, they may already be doing something on the topic in class) and read a chapter of a book about notable African-Americans.

5. Have one of the kids do a presentation on an African-American during a family meeting.

They'll teach everyone and learn something themselves.
